Breaking down glucose.
Autotrophs use energy from sunlight or chemicals to make their own food.Green plants use Photosynthesis trap energy from sunlight and make food (glucose)
We will learn how
cellular respiration is the process in which glucose is broken down by organisms and the energy is stored as atp.
What kind of organisms do this? all living things, Plants Fungi Animals Bacteria
How do we get the sugar: from Plants. Heterotrophs get their energy by eating other organisms. We get the energy the plants stored as glucose by eating plants directly or eating the animals that ate
the plants.
Area with gel-like material inside cell membrane surrounding mitochondria = Cytoplasm
Power plant of cell that burns glucose and stores the energy as ATP= Mitochondria
MITOCHONDRIA = cell power plant Surrounded by double membrane
Outer membrane & Inner membrane (called cristae )
Space between inner membrane& outer membrane = innermembrane space
Space inside cristae folds= matrix
CYTOPLASM surrounds mitochondria
All organisms (heterotrophs AND autotrophs) use the energy in food to charge up their atp This process of releasing the energy from FOOD (glucose) to make atp = cellular respiration
CELLULAR RESPIRATION happens slowly in many steps.
If all the energy was released in one step… most would be lost as light and heat !
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
6 CO2 + 6 H2O + ATP= C6H12O6 + 6O2
CELLULAR RESPIRATION
C6H12O6 + 6O2 = CO2 + 6 H2O + ATP
Amount of heat it takes to raise 1 gram of water 1◦ Celsius = calorie
Unit for measuring energy in food = calorie
1 Calorie = 1000 calories
High energy electron carrier = NADP+
Cellular respiration uses some different carriers to transport high energy electrons.
NAD+ & FAD
The first step in cellular respiration= glycolysis
Glycolysis happens in the cytoplasm outside the mitochondria
Glycolysis
(GLYKOS = sweet LYSIS= split apart )
Glycolysis does not require oxygen
BUT it needs some energy to get it started.
What molecule do you think is going to
Supply the energy do this?
Plants do
Photosynthesis
but plants need oxygen for cellular respiration too. If plants seeds are under water 3 days or more, the seeds will die. If plants roots are under water for 3 days or more, the plants will die.
